The MUNGO ESK – Backbone of the German paratrooper regiment
The air-transportable, protected and all-terrain ESK (Einsatzfahrzeug für spezialisierte Kräfte, or “mission vehicle for specialized forces”) is used by units of the Bundeswehr’s airborne troops, as well as by units of the Joint Support Service and the Military Medical Service.

Air-transportable, armoured and fit for off-road travel
The vehicle in its base configuration has an all-round armored driver’s cab for a crew of two and a universal cargo space. Quick-change systems allow seats for up to eight soldiers to be installed and removed. Six large vehicle doors enable the crew to mount and dismount rapidly.
The vehicle can be loaded in from above or from the side with NATO standard pallets or pallet boxes.
The MUNGO ESK provides its crew with an extraordinarily high level of protection for its vehicle class. The vehicle walls and floor are protected from ballistic attacks and mines. The protected power pack ensures high remaining mobility and survivability.
The MUNGO has proven itself in many ways to be a reliable mission vehicle and material transporter on Bundeswehr missions in Afghanistan and the Congo. The vehicle has a range of over 500 km on roads and can achieve a maximum speed of 90 km/h. It is capable of overcoming inclinations of up to 60 % and traversing hillsides with a pitch angle of up to 30 %.
The MUNGO ESK has a ground clearance of 247 mm and can drive through bodies of water at depths down to 500 mm.
Including the driver, the vehicle is capable of transporting up to ten soldiers along with their gear.
The MUNGO ESK has a total permissible weight of 5,260 kg. The added load amounts to 1,810 kg. The vehicle can also pull a trailer with a load of up to 2,240 kg.
The bench seats can be removed quickly for transporting pallets of supply goods, bulky equipment or two casualties on stretchers. This results in a continuous cargo space 2,100 mm long and 1,320 mm wide.
In total, the vehicle is 4,474 mm long, 2,138 mm wide measured over the exterior mirrors and 2,443 mm high including roll bar and canvas cover.
The use of armored steel provides the vehicle with ballistic protection from small arms fire.
The internal power pack and the use of run-flat rings in the tyres enable high remaining mobility.
The vehicle can be equipped with the available add-on protection to enhance the protection level on special missions.
